Reelfoot Lake is the winter home to over 200 American Bald Eagles and numerous other waterfowl. Each year there is a festival celebrating Reelfoot Lake’s most prized residents.  At the Tennessee State Park experienced naturalists lead daily bald eagle and waterfowl tours from early January through the end of February with the festival occurring at the height of the spotting season.

Reelfoot Lake State Park is located in Lake and Obion counties in northwest Tennessee near Tiptonville. The lake formed during the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–1812, eyewitnesses reported that the Mississippi River flowed backward for 10–24 hours to fill the lake. Today the lake is a popular hunting and fishing preserve. Encompassing 25,000 acres (15,000 of which are water) Reelfoot Lake hosts numerous  shore and wading birds, as well as golden and bald eagles. Cypress dominates the shoreline of the lake and is represented in most photos you will see of the lake.

Reelfoot Lake is located at 2595 State Route 21E, Tiptonville, TN 38079. Park Office (731) 253-8003, Eagle tours (731) 253-9652, Reservations (731) 253-9652, Visitor Center (731) 253-9652 http://www.tn.gov/environment/parks/ReelfootLake/

Tennessee Attractions- Review of National Civil Rights Museum

So Many Tennessee Attractions, So Little Time

tennessee-attractions-lorraine-hotel

During a last minute trip to Memphis I found myself with the better part of 6 hours to explore the city and see some cool Tennessee attractions. I decided on touring the National Civil Rights Museum and Stax: Museum of American Soul. I hoped to add in a visit to the Museum of Rock and Soul since it is located close by but unfortunately my time ran out. In this post I’ll focus on my visit to the Civil Rights museum and save Stax for another day.

It was a chilly, overcast weekday and when I arrived there were only a couple of cars in the lot which provides free parking to museum guests. (This lot is only accessible from St. Martin street.)

National Civil Rights Museum Renovation

Through early 2014 the exhibits in the Lorraine Motel are closed for renovation. Don’t let this stop you from visiting though. The usual ticket price has been reduced to $10 per person and for the first time ever museum visitors are allowed access to the balcony where King was assassinated. Let me tell you it was an impactful experience to stand in the exact spot as Dr. Martin Luther King stood in the final moments of his life. The adjacent Legacy Building is open and you can easily spend 2 hours exploring all the exhibits.
Upon approaching the tunneled entrance to the Legacy Building you will notice what I thought was a sculpture. This “sculpture” actually functions as the gate to the entrance of the building and is a quote from King’s legendary “Mountaintop” speech.
Lining the tunnel walls are images from King’s funeral, images heralding the success of King’s rights movement as well as images of the continuing civil rights efforts of today. Read more »

Tennessee Attractions- Burgess Falls State Park Video

This Tennessee tourism site will give you a big bang for your bucks.

Burgess Falls

Tennessee Attractions Burgess Falls

Actually our state parks are free Tennessee attractions to visit. While exploring the park you can use the picnic area, playground, view the Butterfly garden, check out the dam overlook and enjoy the short hike to the falls.

This small Tennessee State Park is well known for its waterfalls.

The 1.5-mile round-trip River Trail/Service Road Loop is a moderately hard hike taking visitors past four waterfalls on the Falling Water River. The waterfalls are the 20′ cascades, 30′ first falls, 80′ middle falls, and 136′ great falls. You can either hike back to the parking lot along the dirt road or take the 1-mile Ridge Top Trail which is very scenic with views of the main canyon of the Falling Water River. You may also hike to the base of the great falls but remember it is a very strenuous hike down and back out.
